1. The NYC subway system can change on a dime, taking you from early for your flight to late for your flight in a heartbeat.
2. No matter how cute Enrique the ticket agent is, and how deep his dimples are, do not be charmed into checking your bag. When you violate your cardinal rule of travel, nothing good can come of it.
3. The prices at the salad bar at the Whole Foods in JFK are no higher than the ones in the city.
4.People like to tell me about their lives. Wow. It is no coincidence that I write an advice column.
5. People *really* like to talk about their divorces. Really.
6. Apparently I do not look 36 or like I have kids. Boo ya.
7. The JetBlue terminal at JFK would be a good place to go on a date with someone who also likes to watch people.
8. Surliness is contagious, but so is loopy, resigned whimsy.
9. It could always be worse, and sometimes it gets there.
10. Friends who live near the airport and who offer to house you at midnight are as good as gold.
11. When you sleep in your friend's pajamas ('cause your pajamas are on their way to Chicago on the flight you didn't get a seat on) in her spot in the bed (while she's away), her cats will be reeeeeally confused by that.
12. People are basically good. The system is essentially bad.
13. Coffee.
Today is the day I get to BlogHer. I can feel it.
Special shout-out to Enrique and Diana of JetBlue at JFK, the dad who took his daughter to the American Girl store three times and then carried all her dolls through the airport, Ericka and Thomas in the bar near gate 8, the pretty girl in the blue dress who needed to be in class this morning, the mom who was trying to get to her son's graduation this moring, and my cab driver Ira this morning (have a good dinner with Gloria!).
This post is all the reasons why I <3 you, Moxie. Safe, speedy travels, and have a rockin' time at BlogHer!

Whoops, too much time on Facebook has left me thinking that the little heart symbol works everywhere. You know what I mean, though....

Sounds like you had quite an adventure! I hope you get there today and get your luggage with no problems!

OMG! I am NEVER flying JetBlue. My friend and her family were flying home last year and due to the airline's delay missed their connecting flight at JFK. JetBlue had them hang around the damn terminal for 9 HOURS with a 3.5 yr old and a 2 yr old before telling them "oh sorry, looks like we won't be able to get you on a flight out for another TWO days." WTF? They were flying home to Denver not outer Mongolia.
Anyway, obviously airline snafus are a hot button of mine. Hope today goes better.

I'm sorry to hear about your travel troubles. The airlines, the weather, the A line... blechh...
But when you get back to T5, I recommend a visit to the MUJI To Go store & pick up nifty, cheap things! There are great colored pencils for the youths as well. Have a great trip!

There's a Whole Foods in JFK? The world is a strange place.
Glad you got somewhere safely, hope the rest of the logistics go more smoothly. I love your attitude.

Sorry about #9 but I'm glad about #10.
And #12 - so true.
Thank you for making me smile - and grateful for my peaceful day today. Hope it all goes smoothly for you from here.

This is why I take Amtrak everybloodywhere.
Posted by: liz | July 24, 2009 at 11:54 AM
amtrak doesn't go everywhere, alas...
sorry about your luggage going on walkabout, moxie. we were really lucky going to south dakota last week & our luggage went the same places we did. and the toddler only ran amok in the airport once! though that did necessitate me totally abandoning our carry-ons including my pocketbook to chase his teeny ass down. thank god larry was right behind me & gathered up the stuff.

How is there a Whole Foods in JFK when I live 1.5 miles from the Whole Foods Midwest Distribution Center and Warehouse and yet, my nearest Whole Foods retail outlet is, like, 30 miles away? At least you can have lovely olives and marinated onions while waiting in the airport for a day. That kind of alone time sounds rather delightful.
Oh, and olive/antipasto bar at Whole Foods in suburban Chicago is about $12/lb.

Regarding #6: I know people say this to be complimentary, but I hate the underlying assumption that having a baby or being older than 35 automatically makes a woman unattractive/fat/frumpy/[insert negative adjective here]. Not true!

I thought they wouldn't send your luggage without your body on the plane as well?
And I get no shout-out for finding you the granola bars at C Town? Hmmph.
Have a great time at BlogHer!

Great post! I live in Chicago and really wish I could be there for your meet-up but I have friends coming in from out of town. I don't comment much but I love this blog. Thanks for all your work on it and have a great time at BlogHer

Ha! My husband is at BlogHer (work stuff- odd I know) and when I heard you were there I sent him off looking for you to say thank you for helping me to retain my sanity. Sadly that Y-chromosome attention to detail set in and he instead found some Moxie make up counter. sigh.

Just back from the AskMoxie meetup in Chicago. Kids splashed in the fountain. Children found our grown-up talk boring. Big fun was had.
And a word to anyone who is designing mass transit schedules...more of us coming in from the suburbs would have taken the train (because we all live close to one of the lines) if the trains ran more often than on the even-numbered hours on Sundays.

Okay, so explain this Bob. That second movie I returned on Saturday was marked as received at netflix on Tuesday...but the next Movie was not shipped. Now, one is marked as Shipping Today (Wednesday). If my top choice was not available at my local shipping center, shouldn't a "bonus" DVD have been shipped yesterday? I've had good luck in the past, but this is pretty frustrating.

Good insight. I've been rideang about the auspicious year-over-year July sale data, and the tone is much like you say. Things might be looking up. Your point is well taken that year-over-year data isn't just influenced by changes in this year, but changes in last year too. The line graph makes it crystal clear. Thanks.
