Julie writes:
"Not sure if I should see a doctor about this, but I'm betting there is someone out there that can save me the time and co-pay of a doctor's visit. I'm breastfeeding my second son, and my hair is falling out. This happened to a lesser extent with my first, I had a couple bald spots hidden underneath all my long hair no larger than the size of a quarter. I took some prenatal vitamins and it cleared up. This time I'm taking the same prenatal vitamin, and my hair is still falling out. Are there any additional supplements, or different types of vitamins other than prenatals I could take to at least slow down the hair loss?"
Hmm. I know losing hair for up to the first year after having a baby is normal, but this does sound extreme. I never had any hair changes during pregnancy or after having the baby either time, so I went poking around on the internet to see what I could find.
I didn't find much specifically about post-baby hair loss (they all said "it'll stop soon") but did find this article on WebMD with a doctor specializing in women's hair loss and vitamins. Turns out that some of the culprits are our usual suspects for PPD, low sex drive, and basically everything else that goes kablooey after having a baby: Omega 3s and B vitamins, along with iron.
It could also be hormonal, in which case doing the normal hormone-balancing things--sleeping enough (ha), getting exercise that works your core (pilates, T-Tapp, yoga), seeing the sun (if there is any in your area), and laughing--will help.
I'm wondering if any of you out there have experience with the same degree of hair loss that Julie's having. Or if anyone slowed or stopped the hair loss with vitamins or minerals. If so, what did you take? This is one of those problems that sounds minor, but is really demoralizing and could indicate a bigger problem.
I am glad that I found this site! I can't seem to find anyone(postpartum women)to commiserate with. I don't know anyone that has experienced extreme hair loss like me...I only hear some women say that they had some shedding. With my first child I had two bold spots just above the temperal area and now with my second child I have massive hair loss in the same area in addition to my hair line on top. I am so embarrassed to show my hair that I have resorted to wearing a scarf-"fashionable of course"-to hide my balding head.I have just now taken action on the matter! My sister is a hair stylist who told me about a hair product by the name of Nioxin, which is a thinning hair system starter kit. I just purchased the Nioxin today and plan on starting first thing tomorrow morning, so I'll have to get back to you that. Also, massaging your scalp will increase blood flow to the area and will promote hair growth...makes sense "right". In addition to taking your prenatal vitamins, eating healthy, getting enough sleep etc., etc., etc.,. Easier said than done!!! I am willing to try it because I hate not having my hair.

I was wondering if anyone out there can help me find a solution to my problem. I'm turning forty this year 2010. In June of 2009 I had a miscarriage. I didn't know I was pregnant, it was very unexpected and I thought everything was ok after the miscarriage. I have since then experienced a great amount of hair loss. I have two kids and didn't experience any hair loss with them. I have been to have had my thyroid checked and been to a dermotoligist. My thyroid is fine and the dermotoligist said everything was ok. My hair is thining and I have not the clue on what to do!!!

im so glad i found this. my 3rd child is about 5 months my once thick hair is now thin and i have bald spots! im 25 and my hair looks worse than my 55 year old moms! im going to start taking a multivitamin and see if that works. i've been under lots of stress lately and do not get nearly enough rest so im sure that has a lot to do with it. i hope my hair grows back soon!

I wish this thread had been around back in August of 2008. From a few months PP till my 2nd child was 18 months old, my hair fell out. I had just barely stopped feeding my him at 18 months and was experiencing even more hair loss. I waited till he was 18 months because I was scared weaning would bring on depression. I thought it did, but the anxiety I felt and the loss of sexual desire was mentioned here too. My stylist also moved my hairline back 3 times from the hair loss! It would fall out all times of the day. Even late at night, I'd put my hand through it and get 8 strands.
I went through multiple blood screenings. You name it, I had it. They even checked my testosterone levels which were at the low side of normal. I was getting so frustrated with no-one being able to answer me. I saw 3 different doctors in all. It wasn't until around January of 2009 that my hair started growing again. I thought it was because I was making a concerted effort to eat better and exercise. Maybe it was, but I also found out I was pregnant too.
Now my third son is 4.5 months, and just in the past 2 days, I am seeing some hair loss. Like others have said, I noticed it with my first. I lost a bit from my right temple. After the weaning I lost a ton, especially around the left temple. The hard part was that no-one could give me an answer. The one thing I did find out from my OB was that when you breastfeed, your hormone levels get as low as a woman going through menopause, which is why your period disappears.
I still don't have answers, but at least I know I am not alone, which has alleviated a lot of stress I have been feeling these past few days. Thanks so much for posting this.

Excellent points. I would also like to add the importance of getting a nutritional assessment. I experienced unexpected hair loss several years ago. I never had any hereditary concerns. After evaluating my diet and making changes in what I was eating and how I was eating, I began to see consistent hair growth and a much fuller head of hair. I wholeheartedly agree with the recommendation of Omega-3's and iron rich foods. Levels of copper in the body also need to be closely evaluated as too little copper may cause hair loss. Hi,
my hair started thinning after the birth of my daughter and got progressively worse and I started to panic. I only like using natural products if possible, so came across Hair Formula 37, which is a combination of vitamins. After 3 months my hair was in its best condition ever. Now I do believe it would have recovered eventually by itself but these vitamins greatly speeded the process. In my opinion well worth a look.

I highly recommend vitamins, they have really helped my hair grow back after giving birth!

Anyone else have it go on this long?

hair loss is very serious problems specially in women. I am agree with your above post that women have usually complaints about hair loss just after pregnancy. It is because of hormonal changes in the body. I really like your informative article.

It is normal to lose a hundred strands of hair per day, but this increases to some degree after pregnancy. This is because most of your hair goes into resting or telogen phase after you are pregnant giving you those healthy locks.

Hair loss after pregnancy is very common. I have been working with an author, Heather Porter, on Body Back (a mother's guide to medical, physical and emotional well-being) and have learned a lot about hair during and after pregnancy.
Vitamins are obviously a huge part but so is external hair care. We just did a video on an at-home conditioning hair mask, originally shared with Body Back by hair expert Philip Kingsley. It includes eggs so it helps replenish protein to your hair (big part of reversing hair loss). Hope you all give it a try and see some changes after a few uses! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BypmEYtgPN4

I think, with long hair, there is a greater prioabblity, if it snagging when combing or brushing, and some have pulled out. Even with long hair are those that get stuck on their own rather stable in the other, until you are combing, while with short hair, shed hair fall could go free and get lost and thus not counted in the hair inventory. By the way, if you nothing else to do but count the number of shed hairs have every day, you have to get out.

You would probably have to talk to your dooctr about it. He/she will probably write you a prescription based on your needs and then you are free to go to any pharmacy and pick up your prescription. Depression medicine cannot be sold over the counter like Ibuprofen. It would give too many of the wrong people access to anti-depression drugs, which wouldn't be a good thing.

No one invited you here. You are free to beeilve in your scientific poison your doctor is prescribing you every time you have a health problem. And the more scientific he is treating you, the sicker you will get. Look around at the people who've been treated all their lives. They are in wheelchair, some of them not remembering their own spouses and children. And those are the ones who made it the rest are in graves.

Medical treatment is often nresesacy to maintain the “capital hair”. It will only be effective in cases of temporary hair loss. Obtained by prescription, these medicines may be topical lotions type monoxidil 2% or 5% applied directly to parts of the scalp with alopecia. However, this treatment unfortunately implies a deterioration of vision, decreased libido, promote weight gain and development of down on the face and body.

Minoxidil can work and it will NOT make your hair loss worse (you may experience a chgnae for a while because hair may chgnae its cycle, but in 6 months you should have more hair than before). If you stop the hair will slowly fall off again, just like before.

I hate that ive lost my hair, even considered getting rogaine but its so expensive..not sure what happened?? HELP! She was born with significant birth defects so for the first 6 months i literally got maybe 1 hour MAX of sleep per day those first 6 months and its only recently (last 6 months) that im finally getting at least 4-8 hours of sleep. I really need to know what if anything can bring my hair back?

I started loosing tons of hair about 6-7 months after my daughter was born. I have really thick hair , and in the beginning I wrote it off and assumed it was due to stress , new baby , etc. I took prenatal vitamins daily + hair-skin-nails a few times a week throughout my pregnancy. Still taking HSN + regular multis. ( Solgar Omnium ). Everyone was telling me that its normal and I shouldnt worry. And my hair does look somewhat normal to others I guess. But my close friends, m husband, everyone noticed a very noticeable difference to say the least. I finally went to a doctor who said my blood work is fine and there are no thyroid issues. Yet I am still loosing hair 16 months after delivery! Not at an insane rate like in the beginning , but enough to get me in tears every once in a while when I see the shower drain full of hair. At one point , I stopped brushing my hair , because I could not bear it. Any suggestions, ideas ? This is my 3rd child(I am 30 ) and I havent experienced anything like this before.

A lot of women lose their hair after giving birth, especially of them lose hair due to post-partum depression. The best thing to do is to get some shampoo with ketoconazole. the best one my girl uses after giving birth is regenepure
she uses it all the time after the first 6 months of being post-preggo. really good hair treatment. just order some at www.regenepure.com

Hello
My LO is nearly 10 months and my hair is everywhere! It's coming out in chunks and has been since my LO was 3 months and is showing no signs of stopping!! I have one massive bald patch at the back and a few other smaller ones. This is very distressing as it is showing no signs of slowing. My doctor has said it's not post partum related as you shouldn't go bald and everything else's is normal. I take a multi vit and flax seed oil tablets. I asked my doctor about minoxidil but apparently any hair you gain from using it always falls out 3-4 months after you stop taking it, no matter how long you use it for....
