I'm calling in gay.
Mat Johnson: Pym: A Novel
So far this book is everything. Like, everything in literature and exploration and culture all taken in and then spit back out like a serrated knife through soft butter.
Steven Gary Blank: The Four Steps to the Epiphany: Successful Strategies for Products that Win
Dense, with valuable ideas on every page.
Douglas Adams: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Franz Babinger: Mehmed the Conqueror and His Time
Yes, he's reading this huge academic tome. A friend gave it to me, and when I handed it to my son he said, "I've heard a lot about this dude! Cool!" Nerdtastic.
Jeff Kinney: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 1
He's ripping through this one.
Susan Champlin: Fight for Freedom (Cartoon Chronicles of America)

We're going to take some books to a local school library and some toys to a local shelter today.

If I didn't need every single one of my sick days for maternity leave, I would be too. As a CA resident, I am so sad (and ashamed) of the voters in this state.
Posted by: Julie | December 10, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Man, I missed the advance memo on this.
This is a big issue for me, since my sister got married in CA in September, after 28 years with her partner.
Posted by: hedra | December 10, 2008 at 11:28 AM
We're all gay here in the e-l household today. Sending good thoughts to friends c&e and r&m, who got their marriages in under the wire before nonsense prevailed & people forgot that there is a separation between church and state here in the US - California is not exempt from that!
Posted by: eccentriclibertarian | December 10, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Gah! I wish I could call in gay, but my kids won't cooperate. Plus, I work for myself, and my employer might get pissed if the CSA doesn't get its food out. People like to eat.
Will be participating in other ways, though.

are you coming out or supporting the initiative?
Posted by: anon | December 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM
So..... are you trying to tell us something?? :)
Posted by: anonymous | December 10, 2008 at 09:55 PM
the owner of the company i work for gave $50K to the No on 8 fund, so missing my deadlines by calling in gay would punish my employer senselessly.

Good for you! Another CA resident here, completely ashamed that Prop 8 was even considered, let alone that is passed.
Posted by: elisa | December 10, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Another CA resident who is ashamed and angry at the passing of proposition 8. Hate is not a value we should be proud of.
Posted by: Jutta | December 10, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Kate - I enjoyed the funny or die a little too much, I think. Have been singing "pick and choose" ever since. Husband enjoyed it as well and clicked links and got all incensed that this is even an issue, can't we all just get along, get married, and be taxed at the much higher married rates? The man is funny like that.

What CA residents should be ashamed (and fearful) of is that you have a governor who is willing to ignore the will of the people and take this issue back to the courts. Democracy, anyone?
Posted by: Karsten | December 11, 2008 at 10:42 AM
well Karsten, you know what I think, I think you know full well why it's not OK for the majority to vote on whether a minority group gets to retain a civil right the constitution provides them. You are just being disingenuous.
Posted by: anon | December 11, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Let me put it another way, Karsten.
Say I manage to get an initiative on the ballot - "Karsten is not allowed to hold a job in, visit, purchase goods made in, or associate with anyone from the state of California". Pretty ridiculous, since all of those things are your rights, as outlined by both the state and US Constitutions. But let's just say I have lots of money to spend and run an ad campaign showing how 'allowing' Karsten to have any of those rights will ruin the state's economy, promote immoral behavior among teens, whatever.
So if a majority of CA voters agrees that Karsten should be denied some or all of his/her basic constitutional rights - even a majority of one vote - then by your opinion as expressed in your post, that would be the "Voice of the People" and as a democracy, we should go with it. Even if it is 1) against the laws and constitution of CA and the US and 2) counter to any common sense idea of fairness.
Hey, it only takes 100,000 signatures to get a proposition on the ballot here in CA...
Posted by: eccentriclibertarian | December 11, 2008 at 01:19 PM
I forgot to add that the "No on Karsten" campaign's claims (the economy will be ruined! Letting Karsten maintain his/her constitutional rights promotes immoral behavior among teens!) would, of course, have no factual basis or any empirical evidence to support them. They would be merely opinions, or perhaps even outright lies.
Sound familiar?

Even if I had clients on Thursday, I couldn't cancel. I only saw this after lunch, so...
Miss G is now sitting on the couch under hot pink blanket with princess crown on, feeding baby (doll) rainbow M&M's, and I'm going to highlight my hair for this weekend's black-tie event using the products that the very nice gay boy at the Walgreen's cosmetic counter found me coupons for.
[Please, don't take this as frippery! It's the best I can manage today. For point of reference...best friends are gay and straight alike, I'm bi, and I think Prop 8 was abominable. I just don't have it in me to get out of pyjamas today.]
Posted by: Goddess Babe | December 11, 2008 at 02:01 PM
I'm straight but not narrow!
Re: CA Prop 8... Out-of-staters provided the funds and organizing efforts that even put that ambiguous drivel on the ballot in the first place. The will of a certain religious group within the State of Utah certainly does not equal the true "will" of the people of the State of California. I therefore agree with all who've said it is an issue properly before the CA courts. I pray for a just outcome, to finally begin to dismantle the sad evil that is homophobia.
Posted by: hush | December 11, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Wow, way to not let a person have an opinion people! Not everyone has to believe like you. And just because a person agrees with Prop 8 doesn't make them a person of hate. It's their own opinion. Last time I checked, we were still allowed to have those.
I think Karsten just meant that it's ridiculous to have something be voted for just to overturn it when you don't get your way. Why vote? People made a decision, based on a vote and now they are mad? The majority voted, it wouldn't be overturned if Prop 8 had been voted down, but now it is because it wasn't.
