Anyone want to meet up in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 28 at around noon? We need a suggested location that can deal with kids, since I don't know the city well enough. A park or something like that?
Mat Johnson: Pym: A Novel
So far this book is everything. Like, everything in literature and exploration and culture all taken in and then spit back out like a serrated knife through soft butter.
Steven Gary Blank: The Four Steps to the Epiphany: Successful Strategies for Products that Win
Dense, with valuable ideas on every page.
Douglas Adams: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Franz Babinger: Mehmed the Conqueror and His Time
Yes, he's reading this huge academic tome. A friend gave it to me, and when I handed it to my son he said, "I've heard a lot about this dude! Cool!" Nerdtastic.
Jeff Kinney: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 1
He's ripping through this one.
Susan Champlin: Fight for Freedom (Cartoon Chronicles of America)

YES! And I'd say Smith Playground in Fairmount Park:

btw, even if it's raining we can meet there inside the house. :)

ARGH! Finally a Moxie meetup in my neck of the woods, and I'll be elsewhere. What are the odds?
Posted by: SuzieQ | September 17, 2008 at 10:53 AM
YES - I am so into this. I was going to try to make the NYC meetup (we were up there that weekend anyway at the in-laws) but it just didnt work out.
I dont have any great suggestions for a place to meet up either though as we're relatively new in the Philly area and lets be honest, I dont get out much, hahaha.
Hopefully someone else will have some good suggestions.

Wow! You really get around!

Finally, we've got you coming to our neck of the woods! We'll be there. Hope there's rocks to climb. (ETA - I looked at the web page - looks nice. Do we need to register as a group, or will we pretend we just happened to run into each other?)

I've never been to Smith Playhouse but I hear it is great. But I also want to put in a vote for meeting up in Center City. Why not at Rittenhouse Square? Or Franklin Square Park?
Posted by: Danielle | September 17, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I am really excited! We will be there! I was going to suggest Smith Playground too, because everyone loves the big wooden slide, but my one concern is that it isn't the most public transportation friendly place. Maybe one of the Center City parks or Rittenhouse Square would be better if people (maybe Moxie?) need to take public transportation to get there.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I wont be around and i live here!!
I am going to try and get out of my plans
Posted by: Jo-Ann | September 17, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Scratch that my plans are later we will be there where ever it is. Smith is a great place to meet and the 32 bus gets you there.
Posted by: Jo-Ann | September 17, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Ack, I'm at work and don't have my personal calendar here. (Stupid work-life balance issues.) I'm all for Franklin Square Park or Smith. Love them both.

Woo!
Posted by: hedra | September 17, 2008 at 01:05 PM
of course, this happens AFTER I move away! how about coming down to the Virginia Beach area? Pretty please?
Posted by: onehappycow | September 17, 2008 at 01:16 PM
I'd love to be there, but of course, it would be the one weekend that I'll be far, far away. Hopefully, there will be a next time.
Posted by: Dawn | September 17, 2008 at 01:22 PM
I would love to! We're out in the 'burbs, but I bet we could make the trek for this. Name the place and time.

Yee HAH! My neck of the woods on a currently unscheduled day!
Posted by: Goddess Babe | September 17, 2008 at 01:48 PM
We already have a playdate at the great playground at 11th and Lombard on Sunday. Anyone want that?
Posted by: Nancy | September 17, 2008 at 02:03 PM
I was going to try to do the NYC one because I wanted to do a meetup so badly.
but I live 15 minutes from Philly!!!!
I"m THERE!
Posted by: Nutmeg | September 17, 2008 at 03:35 PM
If I can rearrange my work schedule, I'll definitely be there!

So... those of you "in the area but not IN Philly," anyone in/around/anywhere closer to Wilmington, DE?
Posted by: Goddess Babe | September 17, 2008 at 06:11 PM
yeah, some of us go to Longwood Gardens on occasion, too. So if y'all are local-ish, there could be local-ish events, like Caramama does for DC.
Posted by: hedra | September 17, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Did the location of the meetup get finalized yet? (One of Cecily's readers)

Goddess, I drive from just outside philly (in NJ) to Newark almost every day. This = almost past wilmington.
I'd love to be included in local-ish events. I am < 1hr from longwood.

I was wondering the same thing--if most of the Philly readers are actually from the burbs... but that would probably make it harder for Moxie.
And for the person who asked, it would be just as easy for me to get to Wilmington too. But if any readers are from Montco or Bucks, that would make it prohibitively far for them, and again, Moxie, are you in the city or the burbs that day yourself?
And @Hedra--are you local to Philly?!?
I'm loving seeing who's in my backyard and who is coming out of the woodwork as readers that I haven't noticed before.
Thanks Moxie!

Hey, Nutmeg, stop by for lunch when I'm unemployed, I'll be home. ;)
@O, I did my Master's research in Philly, but I live a bit south of there, vote for Biden, Nutmeg could probably walk to my house from whereever she works... that enough hints?
Posted by: hedra | September 18, 2008 at 09:50 AM
I'll post info on my blog about the Longwood meetups (my usual about-once-a-month deal) coming up this Saturday. It won't be on the blog until tomorrow, though. (11-3 or 4 usually) Longwood isn't free, so I haven't really publicized it - it seemed unfair to suggest a pay-to-enter location.
Posted by: hedra | September 18, 2008 at 09:56 AM
And (man, three in a row) Moxie - did you decide on the location for the meetup?
Posted by: hedra | September 18, 2008 at 09:58 AM
OMG! A Moxie meetup! This lurker is so there! Teaching Sunday school until 12:30. Could make it to Smith playground or anywhere in Philly around 1pm. Let me know
Posted by: Mimi | September 18, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Wow, maybe! We live a couple hours away and are moving that week, but it might be worth it…
Posted by: Maria | September 18, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Sounds like so much fun! What about the Philadelphia Zoo? There's a walk at 11 a.m. that day to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. It's only $10 to walk.
Posted by: PomJob | September 18, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Would it be weird for a lurker to show up? My 13-month old would love to meet some new kids! Coming from Bucks, but I work in CC so it's an easy ride for us...
Posted by: jennyG | September 18, 2008 at 09:20 PM
@JennyG...
I'm little more than a lurker (Okay, I guess weekly or so comments for >1 year = not a lurker)... but still.. NOT Weird.
I say that as the person who is as likely as not to show up, see everyone else, revert to elementary school, feel totally stupid and inadequate and split before people notice me.
Posted by: Nutmeg | September 19, 2008 at 07:34 AM
Lots of the folks at the NYC Meetup were lurkers. So, that's a given, at this point! :)
Posted by: hedra | September 19, 2008 at 08:50 AM
And Nutmeg, you better not split. You can sit and be quiet and watch from the peace corner, but no splitties. (stern look) *I* for one, am looking forward to meeting you (et al).
There, was that sufficiently elementary school bossy for ya? ;)
Posted by: hedra | September 19, 2008 at 08:52 AM
Thanks, Nutmeg!
Hedra - you crack me up.
Looking forward to details - hope to see/meet you all.
Posted by: jennyG | September 19, 2008 at 09:05 AM
Oh... oh. I am NOT quiet.
I'm of the type who covers the social anxiety disorder with LOUDNESS And WEIRDNESS (because if you are loud and weird on purpose it's okay when people think you are loud and weird.)
so watch out!
I promise I will not show up and pretend I didn't come.
