Jen, a school librarian, is wondering if anyone has any suggestions of books in Spanish for little kids (pre-K through 1st grade level) about families of different shapes than the nuclear family. Books that are specifically about two-mom or two-dad families, one-parent families, kids being raised by grandparents, etc. Or books like "Everywhere Babies" that just show a variety of different families as part of the story.
Anyone have any ideas for her?
I suggest a search of WorldCat using such subject terms as Single-parent families, homosexuality, lesbian mothers, Juvenile fiction, and Material type, primary or juvenile or preschool and language, spanish.
Tres con Tango, Paula tiene dos mamás are spanigh versions of two of the more popular (and controversial) books of this genre. But there are so many titles you can find; I work with the 18 and up set, so I'm not too familiar with them to be able to evaluate them.
WRT grandparent, you can use grandparents as a subject term, but, of course, in most cases these are not about household headed by granparents. I did find "Sorpresa de Navidad para Chabelita" which is one such. "While living with her grandparents when her mother goes to work in the city, a young Panamanian girl memorizes her mother's favorite poem, "Caperucita Roja," for her school's Christmas pageant."

I'm a librarian too, though not a school librarian!
Vera Williams has a great book called More More More Said the Baby, which has a Spanish version:
http://www.harpercollins.com/books/9780061228766/More_More_More_Said_the_Baby_Spanish_edition/index.aspx
It is probably too young for some of the kids, unfortunately, but it is very sweet. I did a search on Amazon and it looks like there might be some possible options here:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Spanish%3A+Kindergarten+familia&x=0&y=0
You might also be able to get some ideas from the ALSC website (they have all kinds of book lists http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/alscresources/booklists/booklists.cfm) or the REFORMA site (http://www.reforma.org/) if you haven't checked these already. These orgs probably also have listservs, which I always find helpful for this kind of question.

There are several adoption agencies that maintain book lists, which include books about two moms, two dads, transracial families, etc... A really good resource is pactadopt.org. Here are some of theirs and other suggestions:
Cuadros de familia (living with extended family)
All the colors we are (bilingual book)
El arbol de Pablo (adoptive families/grandparents)
Abuela (grandparents)
Cuentame otra vez sobre la noche que naci (adoptive families)
Tres con tango (two dads)

Adoption of orphans from the earthquake was the "hot" to the present "cold", the result of some unfortunate indeed.

In our world, not only do we have variability, we've got unpredictability.
