Thank you all so much for the heartfelt and really, really funny birthday wishes and links. I've looked at maybe 20% of them, and can't stop laughing.
My younger son gave me perhaps the best present a mother of a 2 1/2-year-old could get: He refused to wear a diaper to drop his brother off at school, and stayed dry all day! Then he did the same thing yesterday! And wore regular cloth (not rubberized) training pants to drop-off this morning, too.
What if he potty trains himself, too, just like his brother did? It would almost make up for all the stretch marks.
Edited to add: OK, this almost made me pee my pants: Potty training manual (actually a flowchart)

hehehe

Moxie, Please, please share what you did to lead up to the moment where your son made his own choice -- did you just ignore the whole thing and let him come to it on his own? Did you have casual conversations with him at all that he could make the choice? I remember your posting about it earlier, but I would love to hear more about the "culture" you created in your household to help him make this decision.....

congrats......once you are sure it's permanent, take your diaper budget for the year and buy yourself something nice. Sign the card "Love, El P"

Wait, is there a tradeoff between stretch marks and self-potty training? I must have missed this chapter in the manual!! This explains why Casper wasn't trained until 3.5 - I have no stretch marks! Unfortunately, this bodes ill for Dillo's future training. I still have no stretch marks.

My son has hit the 3 year 'toilet-training-gone down-the-toilet' phase. I was so cockey, thought It had been a sinch. Won't even go into how many times he has dirtied himself at kinder. I come home with 2 little bags of dirty clothes at least every day hanging my head in shame. As Gordon would say...'the indignity'

My son also potty-trained himself a week before his third birthday. I am now a true believer in waiting until the emotional and physical maturity are aligned. We have so far never had one accident and it has been wonderful.

Damn, I tried to leave you a comment (yesterday so still late) and then my computer went crazy and I never got back to it. Here's my funny link, sorry if it's a repeat (I was checking the other you tube links when my laptop went nuts).

Happy belated birthday Moxie! It certainly sounds like your 2 1/2 year old gave you the best present ever!
(It seems a shame that you've missed out on all the fun ...

Our kids are so often on the same page ... almost the same age, as I remember. My daughter did the same thing just a couple of days ago. Hooray! And happy birthday.

Congrats for the birthday gift! I love it when they do that. Now, if the girls would just get on that bandwagon... (since the older two pretty much did the self-training thing. But at least M is now telling me instantly when she's peed, so maybe she's on her way...)
