Q&A: getting grandparents to visit

"My husband and I live in the South and his parents live in New England.  We have a three month old daughter; she is the only grandchild on both sides of the family.  I was lucky enough to have a great relationship with my grandmothers and I think the grandparent/grandchild relationship is unique and important.   My in-laws don't seem to agree.  My husband and I both work and have limited vacation, so going to visit his parents is difficult, but we plan to visit them at their house about once a year. My in-laws are retired.  My husband and I have said to them several times how important we think this relationship is, our door is always open, and even suggested specific dates to visit, but they still won't visit. They came down for a few days after she was born, but they haven't been back and only plan to come back because we've set her Christening date (she'll be almost six months old then). They have enough money to travel, so that is not the issue. Do you have any suggestions for encouraging them to visit? I realize I may be the only person in the world asking for advice on getting her mother-in-law to visit! And honestly, when they visit, they can drive me nuts, but I really think developing a relationship with our daughter is important.  I do realize it might not matter as much right now because she is so young, but I want to encourage a great grandparent/grandchild relationship for the long term."

Unfortunately, you can't force people to want to visit their grandchildren. And as baffling as it may seem to us, some people just don't feel the need to see their grandchildren very often at all. This doesn't mean that they aren't excited about the baby, and that they're not showing photos of her to everyone they know, and bragging about how great she is. It just means that for whatever reason they don't want to visit.

I could speculate ad nauseum about why they might not want to come. They could be afraid of babies and feel like they'll break her. They could be afraid she'll give them colds. They could have insecurities and secrets they haven't resolved that make them feel they don't deserve to be around her. They may be saving their frequent flier miles to go to Hawai'i. They could be afraid of air travel. They could be too self-involved (or, conversely, too insecure) to realize how much you want them to come.

The mostly likely explanation, IMO, is that they don't really know how to relate to little babies. I don't think it's at all uncommon for people (even parents, sometimes) to not enjoy babies and only start relating well to kids when they're old enough to carry on a decent conversation.

I have two suggestions. The first is to make sure you foster your daughter's relationship with your own parents. If your in-laws never end up coming around about your daughter, at least she'll have a wonderful, close relationship with one set of grandparents.

The second suggestion is to act as if your in-laws are just as much in love with your daughter as you are. Send tons of photos, call to relate what she's doing, and continue to invite them and express sincere regret when they don't come. The worst case scenario is that they never make any more contact, but you know you did everything you possibly could to encourage a relationship between your daughter and them. The best case scenario is that they do decide to visit more often to see her and really get to know her. You can't lose by setting aside your disappointment and continuing to try.

Good luck. This situation sounds painful, because it's easy to take it as a rejection of your daughter. Try to keep in mind that whatever is making them stay away is all about them, and not about your beautiful daughter.

Unfortunately, my FIL doesn't see us very often, either. He has ample funds, and considerable time off, and loves my husband (his only child) more than life, but for whatever reason, he rarely visits. When the kids were littler, he went almost two years without seeing them. (No, it's not about me -- we get along fine. I think there are some underlying feelings of unworthiness related to his divorce that make him feel we might not want him around, no matter how much we argue to the contrary. I can't tell you the number of times I've expressed the wish that he'd take the unbelievably generous birthday money he sends me, and come for a visit instead. Seeing his son more often would be a huge gift to me. But it's an unmovable barrier.)

All that having been said, I want to reassure you that as your daughter gets older, you will be able to create for her a connection to her grandparents. We talk regularly about Grampa D. Whenever the toys he gives them are brought out, we remember that he gave them (yes, even now, when the kids are five). We look at photos of his rare visits, and tell stories.

We're trying to create specific rituals for the annual visits he does make, special things that are wonderful memories for the kids, AND connected to their grandfather. He came once for a camping trip, when the kids were two, and they still ask when Grampa is going camping with us again. (Answer: the next time we can get him to increase his yearly visits, and come at a time other than Christmas.)

As your daughter gets older, have her draw pictures for her grandparents, and tell you what message to write on the picture to send. You can do this as soon as she's old enough to hold a washable marker -- 14-16 months.

There are books for grandparents that include chapters about how to be a good long-distance grandparent. You could read through those books in the store aisle to get other good ideas.

I guess my point is, do what you can from your end to create that relationship for your daughter. Maybe it won't ever be as much as you had when you were a child, but luckily, she won't have that as a comparison. Only you are going to feel the (comparative) loss.

Oh, also: my dad has been unemployed for more than three years now. We've paid for him to visit once, but also resigned ourselves to the fact that if we want to see him, we have to go to his home state. It's one of the major reasons why we have committed ourselves to an annual lake vacation. We invite my father and step-mother along (Grampa T and Gramma L) so the kids have those special memories.

I'm incredibly grateful that both my mom and my husband's mom are eager and willing to come visit us. Whew.

I agree with Moxie's second suggestion. My mother-in-law lives out of state, and she has not been to see her grandson since he was a baby (he's 6 now). We used to call her frequently, and send her pictures, but she rarely responded. It's really hard to keep up a one sided relationship. My point is, to try. I gave up, but I tried for over 5 years for them to have a relationship, and it makes me sad to know that they won't.

In my experience (I work with elders), older people often don't like to travel and especially don't like to be away from home and their routines. The noise of grandchildren gets to them too! They also don't like the disrupted sleep.

The writer also notes that when her in-laws visit that they can drive her nuts- it could also partly be that a) they are picking up on that or b) it's mutual!

Also, since this is a first grandchild, keep in mind that most people have no more idea how to be a grandparent than they did how to be a parent. It is a new role, with a lot of dangerous territory and a lot of hidden history... did their parents step on their toes a lot, end up trying to help TOO much, offend, offront, or otherwise tromp on tender maternal/paternal feelings? They may be floundering for what to do, and how, and how to feel about it, and handling all their own memories of the process as well. And they may also be dealing with the conflict between remembering grandparents as 'old' and not feeling 'old' themselves (except when they picture themselves as grandparents). I'm amazed at how many grandparents I know seem to try to fend off age/mortality by fending off the role of grandparent...

Anyway, talking to the grandparents about what THEY want their role to be, what they want the child to call them as their grandparent title, and what YOU want their role to be, may be a big help. My own mom was a huge challenge - she raised seven kids, she was stepping all over my toes trying to keep me from making any mistakes (because after all, she was the expert!)... it was a mess!

I finally pushed her back hard enough to hurt her feelings, and only then did we actually sit down and discuss what I needed from her, what she needed from me, what she wanted as a grandmother (and importantly as a MOTHER to a mother), and so forth. Somehow, I came up with just the right things to say, including 'I get to make my own mistakes'.

For us, the role of grandmother was defined by me thinking through all the roles I was taking on, and determining what I wanted for my children that would not easily fit within that list of roles (in a sane life, anyway!). What that came down to was 'enchantment' - I knew I'd be involved in health, safety, discipline, education, food, self-image, and all sorts of other stuff. But making the world magical, REALLY magical, that was something that would be hard to do on an ongoing basis!

So, I asked her to be in charge of enchantment. I don't think I could have asked for anything better. It is fun, it is something she could be creative with, interpret in her own way, change interpretations over time, suit to any occasion, do at a distance (she carried the role to her distant grandchild, as well - whom she sees less than once a year, by the way, but with whom she talks on the phone regularly now that he can talk on the phone).

Just asking if they can do you that favor, fill in a gap you'd feel you could not meet, is a huge help, IMHO. Especially for a grandparent who is trying to define what being a grandparent means to them, too. Three months is an eternity for a new parent, but barely a blip for the distant family. Give them time, and see if you can work out a framework for what role they can (and want to) have with their grandchild. They may never take it on, but then you can still find others who can satisfy that role (aunts, uncles, older ladies at church, you name it).

I am also quite serious about asking what their grandparent name should be - that question shocked my own dad, because none of the other kids had bothered to ask. It gave him a sense of empowerment in his grandparenting, and showed him that I genuinely honored the role. He's less active in it than my mom (though he's not much farther away), and his role has been defined more by things he can do with older kids (health and mobility issues complicate matters), but he still makes the effort.

Good luck! I hope that helps some. It won't solve the internal problems from the G-parent side, but at least it gave us a way to start talking it out.

Just speaking from the other side, I only saw one set of grandparents about once a year and still felt very close to them - it was the ritual of the visit and the way that week was very special that made it that way, plus a lot of mail and cassette tape recordings back and forth (my grandfather used to read books onto tape to me and send them and then when I could read they started going the other way).

My inlaws informed me when I was still pregnant that they were not coming to visit us anymore because they don't like to drive from their tiny little town to our big metropolis. I can understand, they are older, set in their ways and my FIL has early-stage Alzheimer's. While he's doing well, he still confuses easily. So, we have to trek Maggie and all her stuff the 2-hour drive to see them when we want to. It makes me angry, but when I was growing up my mom didn't get along with my dad's family and I always felt that I was not "supposed" to like them (I do). Thus, I am determined that Maggie feels she is supposed to love my husband's parents and have a relationship with them. It's also important to me that she at least has some small memory of her grandfather before the Alzheimer's steals him away.

I try--I send tons of pictures and we visit as much as we can. Maggie is also their twelfth grandchild, so it's kind of old hat by now. Luckily she took right to them and seems to remember them on our infrequent visits. I try to keep them in her mind by always keeping them in the recitation of "who loves you," by showing her pictures and to act like visits are big exciting deals.

Growing up, I always lived close to one grandmother and far from the other, depending on where we were living at the time. I would see my "other" grandmother more than once a year, but not much more. Still, I would so look forward to their visits even in my snotty teen years. If the relationship is good when they are together, then eventually it will gel.

I wonder if this phenomenon has anything to do with changing demographics. When I was a little girl, my grandparents all lived within and easy day's drive of our house. Additionally, all of my granparents were in their mid to late 50s when I was born. I saw all of them frequently--at least once a month.

Now all of my daughter's grandparents live at least 1500 miles away. My husband's parents are youngish as compared to mine (early 60s) and have been to see us twice. My own parents are in their late 60s/early 70s and don't feel so inclined to travel. Perhaps this is a [not so positive] result of postponing having children and living far away from family?

From the grammy gallery: Nancy and Jennifer brought up really important points. Many people in their late 50s and on may travel a good bit, but always on their own terms. They may love their grandchildren, but not be as interested in their baby years as they were in their own children's. But, mainly, physical and mental syndromes, often very minor, get in the way of picking yourself up and visiting. And you don't want to talk about them. Sometimes it's embarrassing, sometimes it reminds you that you're getting older.

I guess what I really want to say, from a mom whose divorced inlaws gave up on my son,
is that I found wonderful older people who were enchanted by him and gave him as much grandparenting as he could take. That included contentious relationships. I remember being surprised and secretly delighted when my son reacted against a wonderful older woman and her prescriptions for his life. Oh my God, he loves her, I thought. And he did. She died a couple of years ago, and we miss her still.

We are fortunate enough to live close to both sets of grandparents - my in-laws are 5 minutes walk (!!) away from us. Though it can become, errrr... overwhelming, at times, no one appreciates their presence more than me, and nothing delights me more than watching my kids reacting to their grandparents with recognition and love from a very young age.

One of the greatest things about the grandparent/grandkid relationship is that it usually comes without all the "bagage" that a parent/child relationship often carries. Something I learned since my kids were born was to separate my personal issues with my parents or in-laws from their relationship with their grandchildren, or at least to attempt to do so.

I think the most important piece of advice above is to remember it's about them and not you or your baby. It's hard to do, but it will pay off by not creating a barrier of resentment between granddaughter and grandparents.

Something no one else mentioned, but always strikes me: it seems that the grandparents on the mother's side usually (not always) tend to be more attached to the grandchildren than the father's side. At least in a lot of the families I know. I wonder if they'd be more inclined to visit if it was their daughter, rather than their son and daughter-in-law. Just a thought.

I was never close to my father's family because they lived so far away. One week a year just didn't create close enough bonds. For the most part, my mother's family has remained in close proximity to each other. I love that we can celebrate birthdays and holidays and still go back home at the end of the day.

I also wonder about these things long-term... I'm not a big traveler; I'm a major homebody and I hate being away now. If my son has children someday and lives 6, 7, 8 hours away or more, how often would I visit? I'm not really sure how I'll feel.

This is a really interesting conversation. My thoughts...all three of my daughters grandparents live within 10 miles of us and it really is a mixed blessing. My in-laws are retired and have only babysat for us a handful of times, and only in emergency cases...Because of my relationship with my own grandparents and how my mother is with my daughter I expect them to be tripping over their heels to see her all the time but they are not. They often seem indifferent, I think for several of the reasons other people have pointed out above. They are very hands off with children (this is how they were as parents) and I think when she was a baby (she is two and a half now) it was too much for them. As hard as it is for me to understand, I try to respect that.

I spent a lot of time with my paternal grandparents until I was about 4 and they moved away and only saw my maternal grandparents once or twice a year and I had strong relationships with both sets...

Honestly, if the grandparents don't want, for whatever reasons, to be around the grandkids, you probably don't really want them to be: it will just be stressful as they fall short of what your expectations of grandparents should be---I deal with this with my in-laws the twice a month they see their granddaughter...on the other hand, my own mother obsesses over her and that is a whole other issue!!

I'll agree with others who have said that even tho one set of grandparents never visited, that didn't stop them from figuring large in our family's life. Phone calls were very important to participate in, as were cards for every possible holiday. Now that I'm an adult, I'm actually closer with this set of grandparents than I was with the set who lived closer to us, perhaps because of the need for that regular contact that was established when I was a kid and the special times that came from only seeing them rarely.

One thought to add to this discussion… I agree that the grandparent/grandchild relationship is such a valuable one. No one loves you like Gramma, and this closeness bridges the generational gap in ways that nothing else can. If you can’t get the grandparents involved, I highly recommend finding some surrogates to fill the role. I grew up without grandparents (they had all passed away by the time I was 4 or so). When I was fiveish a couple at our church came to my parents and asked if they could be our grandparents. I always knew we weren’t actually related, but they showed up for grandparents days and birthdays and spoiled me with their time and attention. I loved them very much. Perhaps there are some older folks in your life that would enjoy spending time with a young person? That can provide that type of extra attention and affection for your little one?

My husband's family is very different from my own. When my kids were born, this was hard for me. My MIL was VERY excited about becoming a grandma, but after the girls grew out of the cuddly newborn stage, she seemed to withdraw.

Like Moxie said, I know she's showing pictures and bragging at every turn, but as toddlers she has no idea how to relate to them. She rarely visits us, but she loves to have us visit her and have big family dinners. But when we're there, she spends very little actual time with the girls. The last time we went, they spent 90% of their time alone with me in the basement playroom and that's a pretty typical visit.

That said, I know that she loves them dearly. While I feel sad that she isn't closer to them, I don't know that she feels that. I think this is just the status quo for her, and that her way of expressing love is much different than mine. My hope is that when they reach school age, she'll find a way to connect with them on a more intimate level, but I don't know if that will ever happen.

I do exactly what you said, send pictures, art projects, and we talk about her a lot so that the girls know that she's a part of their life and that they love her for who she is.

Of course, it only works when the grandparent is intent on forging a relationship with the grandchild, but maybe it would give your in-laws some ideas. Like Moxie and others have said, maybe they don't know how to relate to a baby and some concrete suggestions would be helpful. It'd make a great gift for the holidays! :)

I am going to be a new grandparent, for the first time. My son and DIL are really great! They love family and closeness - it is what I didn't have growing up, so I think they are on the right track. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do grandparenting. I figured I would be around as much as possible (I live 6-7 airline hours away). But I resent somewhat feeling I am "hired help" - to clean, cook and make life easy for the new Mom. Don't get me wrong, I want to help when it is needed...so Mom could take a nap etc. I guess my idea of grandma is romanticized - it's the holding and rocking and cooing, diaper changing, washing, etc. It is hands on - not housework. So, I agree with the comment to talk about it - what does my son and daughter want in a grandmother, and what I want to give. It is clear to me that I do not want to just do housework when I visit. I am afraid to offend them, but that is how I feel.

I think we live in a day and age where families are not what they used to be! Divorce is the culprit often times, as for my own experiences. At age 5 my parents divorced and then remarried and really neither step parent's priority is me and my sister. I have given up on my dad long ago but more recently my mother who lives on opposite side of map from me recently became a widow and has no intention of leaving her state despite she has two daughters with young grandchildren. I have five boys, a newborn, and a five year old who was diagnosed with brain tumor and for the past year and several months no one came to help us, except my husband's mom. My mom always used the excuse about her husband's health. Year after year before his death, my mom spent every holiday, etc with him and his sons and their families. She continues to complain me and my sister moved away but now I feel that is really old. How many parents wish their kids would take them in?? You would think our mom would be glad to know we would take her in. I have just about given up on it all. I am the only one that ever calls too. If a grandchild with a brain tumor, grade four by the way, with a seventy-five percent surival rate who had mulitple surgeries starting at age four, six weeks of daily radiation, a year long chemo, a shunt in head, IV port in chest and feeding tube in stomach doesnt get grandparents out here, I can't imagine what would!!
I think people are just too selfish in this day and age and do not see what's really important.

I have a great relationship with my grandmother on my mums side but not with dad's. My husband has seen his mother once in over ten years. and she hasn't seen our 3 month old son. my husband is tired of rining her and inviting her over there is always an excuse. for our wedding her car broke down, when our son was born she was waiting on the sale of her house. i have met her once and that was 12months after we got married and onl because we went for a holiday for our anniversary. grandparents play an important role in a childs life but unfortunately not all parents see it that way. It's a pity because they can be interesting people to talk too.

My wife and I have had a long and successful marriage, our children have reached adulthood my son is just finishing high school and my daughter has moved away from home. I have been in the Military for 24 years and my parents and my wife’s parents have always lived in the same town. We have moved only four times in my career to different bases. Although, only once we lived for four years a considerable distance from our parents. We have always had a good relationship with my wife’s parents (the In-Laws), they only live 3 hours away and we visit them quite often and they go out of their way to visit us whenever possible. When we visit them we are always inclined to visit my parents who are glad to see us visit, yet despite the numerous invitations to come and visit us, they always find an excuse why they can’t. I have moved four times in my career, I spent 7 years in one place (close to home – they visited three times), 4 years farther away from home (they visited once), 10 years close to home again ( they visited maybe three times) and finally 3 years again close to home (one visit) not bad 8 times in 24 years. When they call (not often) they have to talk to me, they never want to have a conversation with my wife or their grand children. They are able to travel, as they went to Florida for 5 months every winter for the last 15-18 years. I don’t know what to do, when I hear my kids and my wife talking poorly about my parents, the discussion is never a positive one. When my daughter went off to university for a year and because of her close relationship with my wife’s parents she would call them and they would call her all the time, yet my parents would hardly ever care to question how my daughter was doing in university. My parents did develop a real close relation ship with my sister; she had become pregnant early in her life to a man that was more of a bum. She ended up raising two kids by the same man on her own for the first part until she was having a hard time; my parents took on the roll of helping raise these kids for the next 10 to 12 years. I believe that this has had a big impact on my family’s relationship with them. Now my Brother, who now later on in life has a 6 year old daughter, is finally noticing what I went through the last 20 plus years. Despite his invitations for them to visit them, they always find an excuse. I am at a point in my life that I really do not care if I ever see them again; I make a lot fewer phone calls to them, mainly on special occasions. If I go to visit my wife’s parents, I do not even let my parents know that I am going down their way because I have grown so apart from them, I do not want to even see or talk to them. What do I do this stage of the game? I give up.

My child will be christened in a month or two. My husbands parents live 300 miles away. They have not visited at all. They have not yet seen him at all. My husband just phoned his mother today to ask them to come to the christening. She said to him "I thought he was christened already." They have not come down to meet my parents or to our home at all. It's very upsetting. My husband asked her why they would not come down and she said to him that she couldn't bear to spend the few hours in the car with her husband (that she lives with). I feel very upset for my child.
