We went through this transition too and you can laugh all you like at our solution but it worked. :) But we did it a bit earlier, so your kid might be onto it.

We took a rubbermaid-type bin just a bit bigger than the car seat and lined it with a folded towel on the bottom and then a quilt over that and over the sides, clipped on with those office large paper wing clip-things. Then we put that in the co-sleeper propped at a bit of an angle.

(a moses basket would have worked too but we were cheap)

Then after he got used to that slightly bigger space we did the same with a laundry basket, and then the co-sleeper (size of a playpen) without the quilt, and finally the crib itself.

Good luck!

Shandra, that's brilliant. I think if Jo-Ann does a laundry basket with the carseat cover inside of it she'll be home-free.

Our son has reflux. Besides antacid medication, his doctor advised us to prop up the end of his crib so he always sleeps at a slight angle. He said to use some scrap wood and build a prop about 4" high, and put it under the feet of the crib at the head end. (You can fasten edges on, so the legs can't slip off the prop by accident.) That 4" prop gives a 10 or 15 degree angle. Not as much as in a car seat, but enough to significantly reduce reflux. Our son did not have much trouble with sliding down to the foot of the bed. Flannel sheets and flannel pajamas helped I think. He quickly learned to sleep with his head uphill, and not move around too much.

That kind of prop would work better than putting a wedge under the mattress, since the mattress is not very rigid.

In the long term you can do the same to a toddler bed, if reflux is an issue. We're still propping our 6 year old's bed.

Shandra's idea is brilliant. You also might try getting him attached to a lovey. Give him one while he's in the car seat, let him get used to sleeping with that, then try a neutral site (pack and play in a different room), then the crib.

I'm not clear on whether he still has acid reflux, if not, disregard the rest of this comment.

The angle of the carseat may actually be keeping the acid _from_ refluxing. I have GERD, and one of the things my doctor recommended was putting the head of my bed up on 4-6" blocks.

Shandra - I justed wanted to tell you that my 6-month-old son sleeps in a wicker dogbed with a faux-sheepskin liner. You're not the only one who's willing to go with the cheapest solution that keeps your child happy! It was much less expensive than a Moses basket and my son LOVES it. He'll fall asleep as soon as his head hits the acrylic sheepskin (which I almost never wash - I think the smell is part of the charm).

Actually, Jo-ann's son might like that, too. It could be easily propped up and the small size keeps the baby from moving around much. My son likes to be on his side with his back aginst the high wall of the basket. I got it at petco.com and it came with free dog food.
